The White House on Friday reacted sharply after Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado was awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize , with spokesperson Steven Cheung accusing the Norwegian Nobel Committee of placing “politics over peace.”
In a post on X, Cheung said, “President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will.”
“He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will,” Cheung wrote on social media.
"The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace," the statement said.
In another statement reflecting his ambitions, The White house took to X and posted, “As president, my highest aspiration is to bring peace and stability to the world.- President Donald J. Trump”
This comes hours after Trump did not win the highly coveted Nobel Peace peace prize that was announced on Friday. He had himself constantly talked about his role in ending conflicts worldwide, claiming credit for resolving eight major global conflicts during his presidency.
Most recently, he brokered a landmark ceasefire in Egypt and hostage release deal between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, ending nearly two years of hostilities. After days of negotiations, US president Donald Trump announced this week that Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of his peace plan for Gaza.
The first phase of his plan, announced from Egypt, facilitated the release of 20 Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and promised humanitarian aid and reconstruction, aiming to restore long-sought peace in the region.
The Israeli military says that a ceasefire in the Palestinian territory took effect at 12:00 local time (10:00 BST) on Friday, and that it has begun to withdraw from parts of the Strip.
The first phase of Trump's plan is expected to see the release of all 20 living Israeli hostages in exchange for around 250 Palestinian prisoners and 1,700 detainees from Gaza. Increased amounts of aid will also enter the Strip. Negotiations are expected to follow in the coming weeks Reported BBC
Instead, the Nobel Committee awarded the 2025 the Nobel Peace prize to Venezuala's opposition leader Maria Corina Machado for her “tireless work promoting democratic rights” in Venezuela and her struggle for a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy. Machado, a key figure in the pro-democracy movement, has defied Nicolás Maduro’s repressive regime for decades, enduring threats, arrests, and political persecution. Known as a symbol of civilian courage in Latin America, she has remained in Venezuela despite constant risk, inspiring millions through her commitment to peaceful resistance and free elections.
