GUWAHATI: Union govt has activated a bilateral pact with Singapore to aid the investigation into the Sept 19 death of Assam’s cultural icon Zubeen Garg .
Garg, 52, drowned while swimming in the sea during a yacht trip in Singapore, where was scheduled to perform at the North East India Festival organised by Shyamkanu Mahanta the next day. His 13th-day mourning ritual will be held Wednesday in Jorhat.
On Monday, Assam govt had asked Union home ministry to use the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) India signed with Singapore in 2005. The pact allows both countries to share evidence, documents and investigative support in criminal cases.
The ministry has “invoked the treaty in connection with the FIR lodged by Assam police” regarding Garg’s death, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote Tuesday on X.
