1. Doodle crosses

Dr. Ben recommended doodle crosses such as Cockapoos and Cavapoos, addressing common online criticisms about these types of dogs.

He explained: "There is so much doodle hatred online. There is nothing inherently wrong with crossing two breeds of dog together."

While some argue that these crosses can't be responsibly bred, he clarified that crossbreeding itself is not inherently problematic. In fact, many purebred dogs suffer from genetic bottlenecks due to inbreeding.

The real issue, according to the expert, lies with unethical breeders who prioritise profit over health and temperament. When bred thoughtfully, doodles can be vibrant, intelligent, and affectionate dogs that thrive with sufficient mental and physical stimulation, making them excellent family companions.

2. Golden Retriever

The first words used by Ben The Vet to describe the friendly Golden Retriever are: "Big cuddly teddy bear."

He added: "I definitely have a soft spot for them. While you can't trust any dog completely around children, on the whole, they tend to be really good with kids."

His only "reservation" is that they can be quite prone to cancer and they may drool more than other breeds, a small tradeoff for their loving temperament.

3. Miniature Schnauzer

For those seeking a smaller dog with a distinctive appearance, the Miniature Schnauzer offers charm and health advantages. The vet pointed out their unique "moustache" and well-proportioned body, highlighting that unlike many flat-faced breeds, they avoid respiratory problems or spinal issues.

He said: "They have quite entertaining personalities. They're an intelligent breed of dog. I think they generally have a pretty sound temperament."

Their intelligent and lively personality makes them engaging pets, though owners should monitor their diet carefully to prevent pancreatitis, a condition to which this breed is susceptible.

Overall he calls them a "healthier alternative toa flat faced breed like a pug or a Frenchie" and said thye have a well-balanced temperament.

4. Cocker Spaniel

A high-energy dog, the Cocker Spaniel requires a committed owner prepared to provide daily exercise.

Dr. Ben said: "I definitely have a soft spot for this breed but they are a high energy breed and need a lot of exercise."

He emphasised that these dogs need at least one to two hours of activity each day to stay happy and healthy. They are prone to ear infections, so early and consistent ear care is essential, he advised. With proper attention, Cocker Spaniels can be loving and lively members of active families.

5. Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Drawing from personal experience with a Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Bessie, Dr. Ben praises this breed as a wonderful family dog, debunking many negative stereotypes about their temperament.

He said: "I had a staffy called Bessie growing up and she was a fantastic family dog."

While Staffies are generally healthy, loyal, and affectionate pets, they can sometimes have difficulties socialising with other dogs, so that's one factor potential owners should carefully consider when choosing this breed.
