Households in the UK are being urged to keep theirwindows shut from 7pm onwards over the next four weeks. With temperatures dropping this week following the heatwave, the UK is heading into a period of cooler weather.
As autumn is on its way, so is spiderseason, meaning house spiders are on the move. As the nights begin to draw in, these eight-legged invaders start seeking warmth indoors. Experts are warning that it is not just your standard house spiders to watch out for. The noble false widow spider(Steatoda nobilis) is becoming increasingly common in UK homes. While bites are rare, they can cause symptoms similar to a bee or wasp sting, including pain, swelling, and in some cases, fever. Alan Reid, a windows expert at Art Windows and Doors, advises that the next four weeks are essential. He said: "Male house spidersand false widows are on the move, and homes with open windows are at risk of infestation. Now is the time to seal gaps and shut windows before spider season peaks."
By taking simple precautions now, Brits can enjoy the autumn without unwelcome eight-legged visitors creeping into their homes.
How to keep spiders out
You should close windows in the evening, as spiders move indoors at dusk. The simplest defence is to shut windows from 7pm onwards.
Seal gaps and cracks. Inspect doors, windows, and vents for openings and use weather stripping or sealant to block entry.
Use natural repellents such as peppermint, tea tree, or lavender essential oils mixed with water to deter spiders and spray around likely entry points.
Finally, keep your house clean, as regular dusting and vacuuming removes hiding spots and food sources.
What to do if you do spot a false widow spider
First thing first you should stay calm, they're not aggressive and only bite if provoked. Remove them humanely such as using the "glass and paper" method to trap and release them outside.
In the worst case, if you do get bit, most cause localised pain and swelling. Wash the area, apply a cold compress, and seek medical advice if symptoms worsen.
