A picturesque coastal spot in the south west that has been described as a "timeless location" has been named one of the UK's prettiest autumn villages. While many people flock to the seaside over the summer months, Portloe in Cornwall is just as beautiful over the autumn season, thanks to its stunning scenery and an array of colourful views. In fact, Portloe has been ranked as one of the 'prettiest autumn villages' by Fine and Country, which dubbed the village a "jewel".

The estate agent highlighted the "charming village store and sandy beaches nearby", which is said were "perfect for autumnal walks". The village lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has served as a filming location for several projects over the years including The Camomile Lawn, Disney's Treasure Island, and Forever England.

Visitors can enjoy a meal at the Lugger Hotel in the centre of Portloe, which is described by the Michelin Guide as "the kind of quiet and remote hotel where you go to make a getaway, rather than an entrance". Dinner there is an "elegant three-course affair accompanied by a wide selection of wines, with an emphasis on seafood, especially Portloe lobster and locally harvested crab", the guide explains. The Ship Inn also serves food and drink for hungry travellers.

The small fishing village is surrounded by cliffs and headlands, where people can enjoy picturesque views and walks. Nearby is the Portholland cove and the Caerhays castle and beach, and visitors can also take a short trip to St Mawes and Potscatho, as well as the country village of Veryan.

One visitor wrote on TripAdvisor: "Like a picture postcard, off the beaten track but so worth it for sea view rooms and breathtaking scenery."

Another said: "One of those hidden treasures that we love. Tucked aware and not easy to find, but so well worth the trip. There is no beach to speak of, this is still very much a fishing village. One hotel, one pub, lots of fancy pants second homes and a handful of old fishing boats plying their trade."

Others called it a "lovely, timeless location" with a "beautiful harbour", and one visitor posted: "It is beautiful and makes a nice walk. The views are fantastic and a nice way to spend a few hours."

Someone else reflected on their experience: "A pretty little cove, great for skimming stones and just soaking in the view. There is a coastal path you can walk up for a view back down to the harbour and across the coastline." However, they warned those thinking of visiting not to expect shops and amusement, adding: "This is all about peace and quiet, the views and stopping in at The Lugger for a coffee with a view."
