BBC fans say Tim Davie resignation 'isn't enough' as they make licence fee demand

Two of the BBC's top dogs have quit after accusations of broadcasting bias. Director General Tim Davie and CEO Deborah Turness have stepped down from their positions after a turbulent week - but viewers have said that their resignations "aren't enough" as they made demands to scrap the licence fee.

The announcement follows a week of damaging disclosures about the BBC's editorial practices, including the manipulation of a Donald Trump speech in a Panorama documentary and allegations of skewed reporting on the Israel-Hamas war. The broadcasters are expected to deliver an apology on Monday, but those who tune in to the taxpayer-funded corporation have said that they need to do more. The standard BBC TV Licence fee is £174.50 per year for both homes and businesses. While there are concessions available for those who are over 75, blind, or live in a care home, many people across the UK find themselves paying the full amount. They face a fine of up to £1,000, plus legal costs, and the risk of prosecution if they don't pay up.

Following the news of the resignations, people have said that they have had enough and things need to change. Posting to X/Twitter, one person fumed: "I'm not content with just the resignations of BBC Director General Tim Davie and the CEO of News woman at the BBC.

"They'll just install another left wing plant to push the propaganda. Scrap the licence fee altogether! Defund The BBC."

Another echoed: "Deborah Turness, then Tim Davie, just the BBC this evening, it's been a long time coming and should've happened ages ago, and the last domino to fall, should be the licence fee."

A third added: "The once respected BBC is now an embarrassment. Time to scrap the licence fee and make it subscription only."

"BBC director-general Tim Davie resigning - good news," one more penned. "This is the start of the end for the BBC licence fee. Make it a subscription service and let the British people decide if they wish to fund such woke insufferable guff. I will certainly not be paying."
