While normally cooked in a frying pan on the stovetop with oil, there is a faster and cleaner way to cook bacon. Simon Howie from The Scottish Butcher recommends cooking the meat in the microwave and claims that it only takes two minutes.
He said: "While giving your bacon a blast in the microwave might not be the first cooking method that pops into your head, it's a great life hack for those mornings when you simply don't have the time to get the frying pan out. Personal preferences for the crispiness of your bacon will determine cooking time, but these simple steps will have a bacon buttie in your hand in a game-changing matter of minutes." When sandwiched between layers of paper towels, bacon cooked in the microwave comes out oh-so-crispy and delicious.
What's more, as the bacon is cooked for so much less time, and the fat is absorbed into the paper towels, the lingering grease smell is much less persistent.
To cook bacon in the microwave, firstly place a sheet of kitchen roll on top of a microwavable plate. This will help to soak up any liquid.
Lay out the required number of rashers, making sure they are spread slightly apart. Place another piece of kitchen roll on top to protect the inside of your microwave from spatters.
Cook on full power for two minutes, or roughly 30 seconds per rasher at 900W. Again, this is completely personal preference; you may need to do a bit of trial and error.
This will cook the bacon through but leave it pale and not yet crispy. Fire them in for another 30 to 40 seconds to crisp up around the edges.
It's worth checking on your bacon after a few minutes to see how it's coming along. Because the microwave cooks the bacon so rapidly, it's very easy to overcook or even burn it.
Remove from the microwave and serve up in a roll with some sauce, or however takes your fancy.
Simon said: "And there you have it! Bacon in a hurry, and no greasy pans to wash up. It's a win-win."
