Yoane Wissa clear on type of player Man Utd have signed in Bryan Mbeumo – 'We have arguments'

One of the longest-running transfer sagas of the summer has come to an end after Bryan Mbeumo was unveiled as a Manchester United player. And one of the winger's former team-mates at Brentford has discussed precisely the kind of character Ruben Amorim has got his hands on.

United will pay an initial £65million for the winger across in four instalments, while the Bees stand to make another £6m in bonuses. Mbeumo, 25, has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option of an additional year, despite United becoming angered by Brentford's negotiation tactics.

The Cameroonian has been arguably Brentford's most valuable player throughout their four-year stay in the Premier League. Yoane Wissa has been another vital cog in the Bees' attack during that period, and his fellow forward has previously lifted the lid on the feistier aspects of Mbeumo's personality in the past.

"[Bryan] is stubborn sometimes," said Wissa while sat alongside his now-former team-mate in an interview with Brentford's official website last September. "But we talk, and it’s not about fighting, it’s about understanding each other."

Mbeumo, who comes highly rated by former boss Thomas Frank responded by asking his ex-colleague whether he was referring to his stubborn nature on or off the field. And Wissa didn't hesitate to let him know he felt both were accurate.

"We do have arguments every now and then," the DR Congo international continued. "Mainly about being in the box, when either of us is in the right or wrong positions to shoot. That’s the main thing between us..

"That’s the only sort of disagreements we have on the pitch... apart from when we lose, that’s always tough."

Those comments nod to the competitive spirit United have acquired, something that appears to have been missing at Old Trafford for some time. The Red Devils have fighting personalities in captain Bruno Fernandes, Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte, but the venom that was once so synonymous with the club as a whole has long been missing.

Mbeumo enjoyed a career-best return of 20 goals at the Gtech Community Stadium last season, level with Wissa as Brentford's top scorer. But it seems there's substance to back up his talent, too.

Wissa added: "It was all about finding the right balance between good competition but also fighting with each other. We are also fighting with each other, but that doesn’t mean you have to hate each other!"

That comment in particular hints at Mbeumo's drive to not only get the best out of himself but those around him as well. And the ability to deliver that message without grating on one's team-mates can be a rare quality.

Mbeumo also opened up about the kind of behaviour he feels tends to optimise his play. And it's apparent Amorim and his squad may need to give their new signing the arm-round-the-shoulder treatment, rather than tough love, should he not hit the ground running straight away at Old Trafford.

"I’m someone who needs support and love to give my best performances," said the Cameroonian. "I’m really lucky to have someone like Wissa, who always wants the best for me.

"I always want to give 100%, but there are some times when I’m feeling down, so having someone like him who will help and push you in the right direction is brilliant to have."
