Harry Potter fans 'so excited' as they spot major change to character in first photos

Harry Potter fans have gone wild after HBO released a first-look at the new boy wizard in costume - with some even spotting a major change that's been made for the upcoming reboot. HBO is adapting the JK Rowling novels into a TV series, with 11-year-old Dominic McLaughlin set to play the titular lead.

Yesterday, fans were given a first-look at Dominic in character as Harry Potter as HBO confirmed that filming had begun on the TV series. With circular glasses, scruffy brown hair and a wizard robe, HBO's Harry Potter looks fairly similar to Daniel Radcliffe's iconic film homage - however, fans have spotted one huge difference that they've made to Dominic's version.

Harry Potter's scar - inflicted on him by Voldemort during the killing of his parents - has changed slightly, with the mark appearing to be more faint and slightly hidden by Harry's floppy fringe.

Fans were quick to notice, with one writing on X: "HOLY HIPPOGRIFFS! The first look at Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter for the HBO series is here and he looks absolutely spot on! The robes, the glasses, the scar (even if it's partly hidden!)

"So excited to see this new generation bring the magic to life. What do you all think?"

Another said: "As someone who did not grow up liking Harry Potter but wears glasses and has a scar in the same spot, I'm very happy they moved it to the temple area."

A third tweeted: "Let's take a closer look at HARRY POTTER's look! Tortoiseshell glasses, dark red uniform and tie, black cape, a more natural scar. It differs from that of films. Thoughts?"

Not everyone was pleased however as some fans thought the new Harry Potter looked too much like the film version. "Why did they just try to remake Daniel Radcliffe?

"I mean, I know there's only so much you can do with the Harry Potter look. Scar, glasses, Hogwarts outfit. But come on. This feels like the epitome of nostalgia farming. Suppose I shouldn't be surprised, from Rowling."

Another wrote: "Wait wtf he definitely looks like Daniel Radcliffe."

Filming is now underway on HBO's Harry Potter series, with Good Morning Britain's Richard Arnold announcing that the production was shooting in chronological order. This means that new star Dominic will first be filming scenes at Privet Drive with the Dursleys: Vernon (Daniel Rigby), Petunia (Bel Powley) and Dudley (Amos Kitson).
