NEW DELHI: As India Inc widely adopts artificial intelligence (AI), the Confederation of Indian Industry ( CII) has underscored the need for board engagement in using technology to its maximum, while effectively dealing with challenges emerging from it.

CII has released a 'Guidebook on Effective Adoption and Governance of AI for Board Leaders', which will serve as a guideline for board of directors as they steer their firms towards responsible and ethical AI adoption, the industry body said on Sunday.

The guidebook will act as a practical guide for organisations as they chart out a path to unleash the full potential of technology, while also building in mechanisms to protect them from potential risks emerging from it.

"The guidebook is set against the backdrop of artificial intelligence, which offers tremendous potential for innovation in business, products, services and processes," CII said.

It emphasises "the criticality of establishing and upholding clear and enduring values for maintaining accountability in using AI within business operations," CII said.

The guideline also outlines values as it navigates the AI landscape that will help organisations make decisions aligned with their ethical standards and include the interests of all stakeholders.

"It focuses on adoption of values such as integrity, responsibility, security, fairness, accountability, transparency, which can serve as a moral compass, guiding the decision-making processes and ensuring that the use of AI aligns with organisation's ethical standards," CII said.

The industry body said the guidebook emphasises the importance of congruity between AI strategies and corporate objectives, with the need to establish "accountability and transparency in AI deployments".

"A balanced approach is essential for sustainable and ethical AI adoption in business contexts," CII said, adding companies need to implement processes that help identify and mitigate risks as organisations adopt AI.
