BJP MP Khagen Murmu was allegedly attacked by goons en route Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri’s Dooars region, leaving the leader severely wounded, alleged the party's IT cell head and West Bengal co-in-charge Amit Malviya on Monday.
"BJP MP Khagen Murmu, a respected tribal leader and two-time MP from North Malda, was attacked by TMC goons while on his way to Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri’s Dooars region to help with relief and rescue efforts after devastating rains, floods, and landslides," Malviya wrote in a post on X, attaching video evidence of the purported incident.
Malviya, in his post, claimed that West bengal CM Mamata Banerjee was busy attending a Carnical while TMC and the state administration were missing in action.
"While Mamata Banerjee dances at her Kolkata Carnival, the TMC and state administration are missing in action. Those actually helping the people, BJP leaders and karyakartas, are being attacked for doing relief work. This is TMC’s Bengal, where cruelty rules and compassion is punished," Malviya wrote on X.
Meanwhile, BJP Sankar Ghosh also posted the video, claiming that he was with Murmu at the time of the incident.
According to Ghosh, Murmu along with him were 'heckled' by locals during their visit to the flood affected area in north Bengal's Jalpaiguri district.
Sharing a video on social media, Ghosh stated that Murmu was rushed to a hospital as a result of the alleged assault. He added that the politicians were further attacked by locals in the region while fleeing the place.
ET could not independently verify the video's authenticity.
Ghosh, the BJP MLA from Siliguri, said they had to leave the area immediately after the incident to rush the Malda Uttar MP to the hospital.
The two BJP leaders were visiting flood-affected region to assess the situation following heavy rainfall that has battered several districts of north Bengal over the past two days.
'Mamata in full panic mode': Suvendu Adhikari
West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Monday accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of orchestrating violence against BJP leaders and obstructing relief work in the flood-ravaged districts of North Bengal.
Adhikari alleged that BJP MPs and MLAs were attacked while visiting flood-hit areas to distribute relief materials. He claimed that BJP MP Khagen Murmu sustained injuries and MLA Shankar Ghosh’s vehicle was attacked during the visit.
In a post on X, Adhikari launched a sharp attack on the Chief Minister, accusing her of being indifferent to the plight of flood victims while attending public events in Kolkata.
“Mamata Banerjee is on full Panic Mode. She has realized it (quite late) that the People of West Bengal have despised her inhuman act of ‘Dancing at Carnival with Celebrities’ when North Bengal was reeling under floods and landslides, with many People losing their lives and thousands left shelterless. In contrast, BJP Bengal MLAs & MPs were on ground doing their bit to provide relief to the affected People,” Adhikari wrote on X.
Adhikari further alleged that the Chief Minister had “unleashed her goons” to attack BJP leaders in an attempt to prevent them from engaging in relief work.
“So, she has now pressed the panic button and has now unleashed her goons belonging from the ‘Special Community’ and incited them to attack the BJP MPs and MLAs so that they can be refrained from engaging in relief work. MP Shri Khagen Murmu was brutally attacked and has been left with bloody injuries in Nagrakata today when he was accompanying BJP Bengal President Shri Samik Bhattacharya to the flood-affected areas. MLA Dr Shankar Ghosh’s vehicle also came under attack in the presence of Police. Mamata Banerjee, you can’t intimidate BJP,” Adhikari’s post read.
At least 18 people were reported dead in Darjeeling district following incessant rain that lashed North Bengal over the weekend. According to district authorities, 11 deaths were recorded in Mirik alone till October 5. Four people were killed in Jorebunglow, two in Sukhia Pokhari, and one in Darjeeling Sadar as torrential rains triggered landslides and flash floods across the region.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee earlier said that 23 people have died so far across North Bengal due to flooding and heavy rainfall.
